Omowunmi Enikannaye – One Family at a Time Initiative, Ondo State

Omowunmi Enikannaye is a 69-year-old grandmother caring for four of her grandchildren in a fragile, makeshift apartment in Ago Debo community, Ilaje Local Government, Ondo State. The building, made from palm fronds, has no doors or windows, and lacks basic furniture and amenities. The children were abandoned by their parents, leaving Omowunmi to provide for them with no stable source of income, surviving by picking palm kernels around the community.

Humanitarian Support and Donations

With support from the Muriel Gordon Foundation, BruderHilfe provided food provisions, clothing, footwear, books, toys, blankets, and bedding. Mrs. Mary Bruder, Executive Director, personally delivered these items to the family. Additional financial support was also provided to assist with day-to-day upkeep. Plans are underway to establish Omowunmi in a business producing palm products, creating a sustainable source of income for the family.

Education for the Grandchildren

All four grandchildren, aged 4 to 12 years, have been enrolled in school, with school fees, uniforms, footwear, books, and other educational materials provided under BruderHilfe’s scholarship scheme. The children were placed in classes according to their literacy levels, and have since shown significant academic and social improvement.

Housing and Safety

BruderHilfe, in partnership with international donors, is currently constructing a proper home for Omowunmi and her grandchildren to ensure their safety and comfort. The new home will protect the family from rodents, reptiles, and potential predators, providing a secure environment for the three girls, who are particularly vulnerable due to the conditions of their previous shelter.

Through the “One Family at a Time” initiative, BruderHilfe is transforming the lives of Omowunmi and her grandchildren, providing stability, education, and hope, and empowering them to thrive despite years of hardship.
