Jummai Barak: A Story of Perseverance and Ambition

Jummai Molbenata Barak’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination in the face of challenges. Born in Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos, as the sixth of eight children, Jummai became mobility impaired due to a medical error at just eight months old.

Early Life and Education

Despite her disability, Jummai’s mother was determined to give her a proper education. Many schools initially rejected her, but her mother persevered and secured a place for Jummai at Dream Makers School, where she received a scholarship. Between 2001 and 2021, Jummai completed her primary and secondary education, demonstrating exceptional intelligence and ambition.

Vocational Skills and Independence

Unable to pursue higher education due to financial constraints, Jummai turned to vocational skills, becoming a skilled hairdresser and baker. She has consistently overcome barriers, relying on family for mobility support until now.

BruderHilfe Support

In July 2021, Jummai visited the BruderHilfe office in Lagos and presented a birthday cake to showcase her baking skills. In return, Mrs. Mary Bruder presented her with a standard multipurpose wheelchair and welcomed her into the BruderHilfe family. The organization also pledged financial support and resources to help Jummai establish and expand her business.

Jummai expressed immense gratitude, highlighting how the wheelchair will allow her to move independently and grow her business. She also shared her struggles as a person with disability in Nigeria, including limited employment opportunities and difficulty accessing assistive devices.

A Bright Future

Jummai is determined to inspire others with disabilities in Nigeria. Fluent in Hausa, Yoruba, and English, she loves music, meeting new people, and helping others thrive. With proper support, she promises to expand her skills, uplift others, and create a meaningful impact in her community.
